Room 3 are concerned about the over use of plastic and also the amount of plastic that escapes from our rubbish bins. What can we do about it and does the amount of rubbish that goes into our local waterway effect the quality of the water?

Room 3 went to MindLab earlier this term. For our first activity we learnt how to programme a remote so that we could control a robotic car. Then we learnt how to make an electrical circuit using a battery, and an LED light. We then constructed our own cars from the materials made available to us, but this time instead of a battery, we included a solar panel into our circuit. Some of us had some success :) Learning about how the plants in our environment spread and reproduce was really interesting. We even got to make models of our own that showed the many methods that seeds disperse.
We had a fabulous day at Waihirere Domain. We learnt about how scientists assess the health of the stream and then we were able to collect and classify some of the community of fresh water bugs that live in the local stream. We learnt that this information revealed a lot about the habitat they lived in. Such information can indicate whether a stream should be preserved in its existing good condition, or whether there may be a need for some form of restoration. Waihirere is a good example of a healthy stream. It will be interesting to compare the results when we test the little stream that runs beside the school.
What a fantastic day we had at Makarori Beach. Weather was perfect and a great bunch of parents to help us out with transport and supervision. Thank you all so much! We couldn't have done it without you!
Welcome back to another term of learning.
In Room 3 this term, and for the remainder of this year, there will be a focus on science. What is science? Science is a way of investigating, understanding and explaining the world around us and the wider universe. It involves making observations, exploring, carrying out investigations, communicating and questioning with others in order to develop scientific literacy. The purpose of studying science in our classroom is for students to develop accurate views of what science is, looking at things 'through a scientific lens' to see what the science is behind them. So I look forward to introducing lots of activities that promote scientific reasoning and thinking. If your child is interested in entering an exhibit in the science fair, feel free to contact me if you have any queries regarding this. Entries will need to be into school by 11th September. We will start working on speeches next week. The topic for the inter school competition is "The power of relationships" Talk to your child about some of the options they can write a speech about that focuses on the importance of relationships in their lives. Remember that book character parade is this Friday on the 14th. Karen Peake |
