We had a fabulous day at Waihirere Domain. We learnt about how scientists assess the health of the stream and then we were able to collect and classify some of the community of fresh water bugs that live in the local stream. We learnt that this information revealed a lot about the habitat they lived in. Such information can indicate whether a stream should be preserved in its existing good condition, or whether there may be a need for some form of restoration. Waihirere is a good example of a healthy stream. It will be interesting to compare the results when we test the little stream that runs beside the school.
